Disclaimer

This Disclaimer sets out important limitations on what Niyam is and what its outputs represent. Please read this before using the Service.

Not legal advice

Niyam is a research and drafting tool. Nothing generated by the Service constitutes legal advice to any end client, whether directly or indirectly. The Service is designed for use by legal professionals — advocates, solicitors, in-house counsel, law students, and researchers — who retain full professional responsibility for evaluating, verifying, and applying any output.

The distinction is important: a lawyer who uses Niyam to research a question and then advises a client is giving legal advice. Niyam is the instrument; the lawyer is the advisor. The client's relationship is with the lawyer, not with Niyam.

If you are a member of the public seeking legal advice about a specific personal or business situation, please consult a qualified advocate or solicitor enrolled with a Bar Council or the relevant professional body in your jurisdiction. AI-generated research is not a substitute for personalised legal advice from a qualified professional who understands your specific circumstances.

Accuracy of AI outputs

Niyam uses artificial intelligence, including large language models and retrieval-augmented generation, to produce research summaries, draft documents, and answers to legal questions. AI-generated outputs may contain errors, omissions, outdated information, or — in some cases — incorrectly attributed or fabricated citations even when the system is designed to prevent this.

All outputs must be independently verified by a qualified legal professional before reliance, particularly before any output is submitted to a court, tribunal, regulatory body, or communicated to a client as authority for a legal position.

We invest significantly in citation grounding, retrieval from primary sources, and hallucination mitigation mechanisms. These reduce errors but do not eliminate them. No AI system can guarantee accuracy. The professional using the output is responsible for its verification and application.

Treat all Niyam outputs as a research starting point — a well-organised set of leads to verify — rather than as confirmed, authoritative conclusions.

Good-law status

Niyam includes a good-law checking feature that flags whether cited judgments have been approved, distinguished, criticised, or overruled in subsequent cases within our indexed corpus. This is a meaningful first-pass check that adds value over bare citation retrieval.

This feature is not a comprehensive citator service. Good-law status is assessed against our corpus as at the time of query. Judgments decided after our corpus was last updated, or decisions from tribunals or jurisdictions not fully indexed, cannot be checked. The status shown reflects what we know from our corpus, not from all possible Indian legal sources.

For any high-stakes matter — argued pleadings, Supreme Court special leave petitions, regulatory proceedings with significant consequences — independently verify good-law status through an authoritative citator service such as Manupatra, SCC Online, or an equivalent.

Coverage limitations

Our corpus currently covers more than 72,000 Indian judgments from the Supreme Court of India and the High Courts. This is a substantial corpus, but it is not comprehensive. Not every judgment, tribunal decision, appellate order, or statutory amendment is indexed.

Gaps in coverage mean that some relevant authorities may not appear in responses. Where the corpus does not contain adequate grounding for a reliable answer, Niyam is designed to say so rather than fabricate a response. However, absence of a citation in a Niyam answer does not guarantee that no relevant authority exists — it means we did not find it in our corpus.

Tribunal decisions (National Company Law Tribunal, Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, Debt Recovery Tribunal, etc.) have limited coverage at this stage. Statutory coverage focuses on central legislation; state-level legislation and subsidiary rules may not be fully indexed.

We expand corpus coverage on a rolling basis and will update this disclaimer as coverage improves.

Professional conduct obligations

Advocates and other legal professionals using Niyam remain fully subject to all applicable professional rules of conduct, including but not limited to obligations regarding accuracy in submissions, candour to the court, independent professional judgment, and duties to clients. Using Niyam does not discharge, reduce, or modify any of these obligations.

Submitting AI-generated content to a court or tribunal without independent verification — and without making any disclosures required by applicable court rules, practice directions, or bar council guidelines — is the sole professional responsibility of the submitting advocate.

The Bar Council of India and individual state bar councils may issue or have issued guidelines on the use of AI in legal practice. You are responsible for knowing and complying with applicable guidance in your jurisdiction.

No warranty

The Service is provided on an 'as is' and 'as available' basis. We make no warranty, express or implied, regarding the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or fitness for a particular purpose of any output generated by the Service.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any output will be free from fabrication, omission, or mischaracterisation of legal authority.
