The Supreme Court overturned the High Court's decision which had declared the land acquisition proceedings lapsed under Section 24(2) of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. The Court reasoned that the mere failure to deposit compensation in court, while it was deposited in the treasury, does not automatically lead to lapsing of acquisition proceedings. The appeal by the Ayodhya Faizabad Development Authority was thus allowed, reinstating the validity of the acquisition.
