Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision to grant Rs.10 lakhs as compensation to the respondent for the denial of compassionate appointment following the death of his father, a BSNL employee. The court found that the respondent was eligible under the 1998 Scheme for compassionate appointments, which was in effect at the time of his father's death and his application submission. The subsequent introduction of a new scheme did not affect the respondent's rights under the earlier scheme, leading to the conclusion that the denial was arbitrary.
