Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court ruled that the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) is to be treated as an autonomous department of the University of Mumbai for the academic year 2019-2020, based on the provisions of Section 122(4) of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. The Court held that JBIMS's autonomy, previously granted for the period 2014-2019, was valid and should be recognized for admissions, thereby allowing JBIMS to conduct its own admission process independently of the Common Entrance Test (CET). The Court's decision overturned the Bombay High Court's ruling that had implications for the allocation of seats in JBIMS.
