Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the termination of an ad-hoc lecturer's services, based on unsatisfactory performance, does not carry a stigma and is permissible under the terms of the appointment. The Court emphasized that the appointment was not on probation but purely ad-hoc, allowing for termination without notice as per the appointment conditions. The Division Bench of the High Court was found to have exceeded its jurisdiction by treating the termination as stigmatic, contrary to the provisions of Statute 53 of the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994.
