Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court, while exercising its jurisdiction under Article 32 of the Constitution, addressed a dispute regarding the seniority of cardiac surgeons at AIIMS. The petitioners sought a writ of mandamus to determine their seniority over the Fourth respondent based on a 1997 policy, challenging subsequent office memoranda that altered their ranking. The Court held that the Fourth respondent had consistently ranked senior to the petitioners in all appointments and promotions, thereby dismissing the petitioners' claims for seniority.
