Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court examined the constitutional validity of Rule 3(1)(c) of the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulations of Admission into 1st year MBBS/BDS Courses) Rules, 2017, under Article 32 of the Constitution. The Court held that while the State can provide for preferences in admissions, such classifications must be based on objective criteria and have a rational nexus to the objective sought. The Court found that the requirement for candidates to have studied in Assam from Class VII to XII was arbitrary and unconstitutional, thereby striking down the rule.
