Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the systemic sexual abuse of children in orphanages and government institutions, emphasizing the urgent need for effective implementation of child protection laws including The Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005, The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000. The Court held that the rights of children can only be secured through proper monitoring and enforcement of these statutes, and expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress made by the States in this regard. The Court expanded the scope of the PIL to include broader issues affecting children's rights.
