Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the appellant's monthly income should be assessed at Rs.15,000 for the purpose of compensation in a motor accident case, overturning the lower courts' assessments of Rs.5,500 and Rs.6,500. The Court emphasized that the absence of formal evidence regarding income does not negate the appellant's self-assessment as a painter. The compensation awarded will carry interest at 9% per annum from the date of the claim petition, with a directive for the respondent to deposit the amount within three months, failing which interest will increase to 18%. The appeal was allowed accordingly.
