Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the legality of retelecasting live broadcasting signals of cricketing events shared with Prasar Bharati under Section 3 of the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007. The Court held that while the respondents must share live feeds with Prasar Bharati, the subsequent retelecast by cable operators to non-subscribers of Prasar Bharati's networks raises legal concerns under Section 8 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. The Court did not find any objection to the validity of the Sports Act, 2007, but emphasized the need for clarity on the retelecast provisions.
