The Supreme Court dismissed the appeals, holding that the acquisition proceedings lapsed as they were not concluded within the time frame stipulated by The Land Acquisition Act, 1894. The Court granted the appellant a one-year period to initiate fresh acquisition proceedings under Section 11 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. It clarified that failure to initiate such proceedings would require the appellant to return possession of the land to the original owners.
