Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the validity of the condition imposed by the Uttar Pradesh Government requiring in-service Medical Officers to work for three years in rural or difficult areas to qualify for a 30% reservation in Post Graduate Medical courses. The Court held that this condition was unconstitutional as it violated Articles 14, 15, and 16 of the Constitution of India, which guarantee equality and non-discrimination. Consequently, the Court upheld the High Court's decision to quash the Government Orders and directed the issuance of No Objection Certificates for the petitioners' admission to the courses.
