Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the validity of the condition imposed by the Uttar Pradesh Government requiring in-service Medical Officers to work for three years in rural areas to qualify for a 30% quota in Post Graduate Degree Courses. The Court held that such a condition is ultra vires and violates Articles 14, 15, and 16 of the Constitution of India, as there is no provision in The Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 or the Medical Council of India Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000 supporting this reservation for Degree Courses. Consequently, the Court quashed the Government Orders and upheld the eligibility of the petitioners for admission without the contested condition.
