Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court overturned the Delhi High Court's ruling that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board lacks the authority to fix maximum retail prices and network tariffs for gas distribution, as per the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act, 2008. The Court held that Sections 11(e) and 61(2) of the Act empower the Board to regulate transportation rates and related charges, thus affirming the Board's authority to issue such directives. Consequently, the High Court's order was quashed, reinstating the Board's regulatory powers.
