Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the validity of the eligibility criteria for NRI admissions to the M.B.B.S. course as specified in the prospectus issued by the Chandigarh Administration and the Government Medical College, Chandigarh. The Court held that the definition of NRI, which prioritized candidates with ancestral ties to Chandigarh, was discriminatory and violated the principles of equality under Article 14 of the Constitution. Consequently, the Court set aside the impugned orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, allowing the contesting Respondent's admission under the NRI category.
