Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court held that under the Workmen's Compensation Act, interest on compensation is payable from the date of the award, not from the date of the accident, as established in Oriental Insurance Company Limited v. Siby George [(2012) 12 SCC 540]. The Court found the High Court's reliance on Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation v. Satnam Singh [(2011) 14 SCC 758] to be erroneous, as it did not consider relevant precedents. The appeal was allowed, and the High Court's order was set aside, reinstating the original compensation order with interest from the date of the accident.
