Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court ruled that the Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta and Up-Lokayuktas (Amendment) Act, 2012, which extended the term of the Lokayukta from six to eight years, is unconstitutional as it violates the provisions of Article 14 and Article 21 of the Constitution. The Court held that the amendment cannot apply retrospectively to the sitting Lokayukta, Mr. Justice N.K. Mehrotra, who had completed his term on 15.03.2012. Consequently, the Court issued a writ of quo warranto against Mr. Mehrotra, declaring his continued tenure as Lokayukta invalid.
