Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court ruled that Land Settlement Certificates issued after the notification under Section 6(1) of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, are invalid and do not confer rights to claim compensation for acquired land. The Court held that the appellants' certificates were issued in violation of the prohibition on allotment to private individuals established by the State Government's notification dated 14.6.1985. Consequently, the appeal was dismissed, affirming the Gauhati High Court's decision that the appellants were not entitled to compensation.
