Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision to enhance the compensation awarded to the parents of the deceased, Yogendra Kumar Pathak, who died in a motor vehicle accident due to the negligent driving of the respondent. The Court noted that the High Court correctly applied the multiplier method as established in Sarla Verma v. Delhi Transport Corporation (2009) 6 SCC 121, increasing the multiplier from 9 to 18 and awarding a total compensation of Rs. 3,39,000. The Court emphasized that the age of the deceased is relevant for determining the multiplier, but the average age of the parents should also be considered.
