Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court modified the sentence imposed under Section 306 IPC, reducing it to the period already undergone by the appellants, who had been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment for abetment of suicide and one year under Section 498A IPC, both to run concurrently. The Court noted that there was no evidence of cruelty after May 2001, despite the suicide occurring in April 2002. The appeal was dismissed with the modification of the sentence, allowing for the immediate release of the appellants if not required in any other case.
