Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the petitioner, Mr. Ravinder Raj, is liable to pay the increased excise duty on the Maruti Car-800 due to the price hike occurring after the official billing date of 5th April 1989. The Court established that the liability to bear the increased cost lies with the buyer when the payment was made subject to the prevailing price at the time of billing. The Court dismissed the Special Leave Petition challenging the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission's order, thereby upholding the Commission's decision that the delay in delivery did not absolve the petitioner from the price increase responsibility.
