Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the compassionate appointment scheme was abolished by the SBI Scheme for payment of ex-gratia lumpsum amount effective from 4.8.2005, and therefore, the respondent's application for compassionate appointment made in June 2005 could not be considered under the old scheme. The Court emphasized that compassionate appointments are not a right but a concession, and the new scheme applies to pending applications if they meet its terms. The Court overturned the High Court's directive for reconsideration under the old scheme, ruling in favor of the Bank.
