The Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the appellant under Section 5(1)(d) read with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, for attempting to extort money as a Patwari. However, considering the appellant's age of 72 years and the prolonged pendency of the case since January 1987, the Court modified the sentence from one year to three months, allowing all substantive sentences to run concurrently. The appeal was dismissed with this modification.
