Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the legal question of whether cooperative societies operating in both Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal post-reorganization are governed by the U.P. State Cooperative Societies Act, 1965 or the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 1984. The Court held that the PACSFED automatically became a Multi-State Cooperative Society under Section 95 of the Multi-State Act upon the reorganization on 09.11.2000. Consequently, the Court quashed the High Court's order that had annulled the registration of PACSFED under the Multi-State Act, thereby upholding the Central Government's decision.
