Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the appellant, who was a juvenile at the time of the offense on 20/2/1996, is entitled to the benefits under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, as amended on 22/8/2006, and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Rules, 2007. The Court noted that the High Court's judgment was rendered before the relevant rules were in force, thus the appellant's conviction was confirmed but he was ordered to be released from custody considering the time already served. The appeal was allowed to this extent.
