Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed an appeal regarding compensation awarded under Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, following a fatal accident involving a bus and a two-wheeler. The Court found that the High Court had inadequately justified its increase of compensation from Rs.1,83,500 to Rs.4,05,500, particularly concerning the deceased's income, which lacked evidentiary support. Consequently, the Court recalibrated the compensation amount to Rs.3,00,000 with 6% interest from the date of the claim application, allowing the appeal to this extent.
