Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court directed that no zoo shall breed animals beyond the limits set by the Central Zoo Authority as per its directive dated 7.2.1995. The Court mandated the Central Zoo Authority to formulate comprehensive guidelines for handling applications for zoo recognition and managing animals in de-recognised zoos. Following the rejection of 291 applications, the Court noted that 260 zoos were closed, and it directed further action regarding the remaining applications. The petition was disposed of with the liberty for authorities to act against violations of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
