Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the multiplier of 13, as prescribed in the Second Schedule of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, should be applied for calculating compensation in motor accident cases involving a deceased aged 48 years. The Court restored the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal's award of Rs. 11,24,500, which included various heads of compensation, and set aside the High Court's reduction of the multiplier to 10. The appellants were also entitled to interest at the rate of 7.5% per annum from the date of the petition until payment.
