Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the multiplier of 13, as prescribed in the Second Schedule of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, should be applied for calculating compensation in motor accident cases involving a deceased aged 48 years. The Court restored the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal's award of Rs. 11,24,500, overturning the High Court's reduction to Rs. 7,10,000. The appellants were also entitled to interest at 7.5% per annum from the date of the petition until payment.
