Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that HPCL's statutory right for lease renewal under Sections 5 and 7(3) of the 1974 Acquisition Act was valid, determining that the standard rent of Rs.50,000 per month should apply from 15th March 2000, not 15th March 1990. The Court found that the District Magistrate erred in the initial determination of the rent date but upheld the rent amount due to HPCL's failure to provide evidence challenging the proposed rate. The appeal was partly allowed, affirming the High Court's decision on the standard rent while leaving other contentions open for future litigation.
