The Supreme Court held that the availability of an alternative remedy is not an absolute bar to granting relief under Article 226 of the Constitution. The Court found that the High Court erred in dismissing the writ petition on the grounds of alternative remedy, as the respondent (Union of India) admitted liability for the amount collected by mistake. The Court set aside the High Court's order and directed the respondents to pay the admitted liability along with interest at 6% per annum within three months.
