Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that in determining loss of dependency under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the Tribunal's deduction of 50% for personal expenses was incorrect for a bachelor. The Court established that a bachelor would likely contribute 2/3rd of his income to his family, leading to a recalculated annual loss of dependency of Rs. 20,000/-. The multiplier was also adjusted from 11 to 12, resulting in a total compensation of Rs. 2,50,000/- including funeral expenses, with interest at 9% per annum from the date of the petition.
