Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court upheld the Gauhati High Court's order directing the Union of India to implement the re-designation of the rank of Havildar (Radio Mechanic) to Warrant Officer and to grant the corresponding pay scale as per the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF). The Court found that the Ministry of Home Affairs had previously acknowledged the need for equal pay structures among paramilitary forces, and the denial of such parity constituted discrimination. The Court emphasized that the principles of equality and non-discrimination in service conditions must be upheld under Article 14 of the Constitution of India.
