Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court, while adjudicating a writ petition under Article 32, directed the Maharashtra State to create a uniform single cadre of District Judges by merging various judicial posts and determining seniority based on the date of entry into service. The Court emphasized the necessity of uniformity in the designation and hierarchy of judicial officers as previously mandated in All India Judges' Association (I) vs. Union of India, and quashed the Maharashtra Judicial Service (Seniority) Rules 2007 for being inconsistent with this directive. The Court held that the State must comply with the established guidelines for judicial service uniformity and seniority.
