Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed the interpretation of Regulation 17 of the Indian Bank (Employees’) Pension Regulations, 1995, and Regulation 37 of the Indian Bank Officers’ Service Regulations, 1979, concerning the computation of pensionary benefits for employees who took extraordinary leave without pay. The Court held that while all leave for which salary is payable counts as qualifying service, extraordinary leave on loss of pay does not qualify under Regulation 17 for pension computation. Consequently, the appeals against the Madras High Court's decision allowing the respondents' writ petitions were dismissed, affirming the Bank's interpretation of the regulations.
