Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the Madras High Court's dismissal of writ petitions challenging notices issued by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The Court affirmed that the stone crushing units operated by the appellants were located within 500 meters of residential areas, violating the amended Rule 36(1) of the Tamil Nadu Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 1959. The Court held that the Board's actions were justified in light of the established distance regulations for pollution control.
