Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Central Administrative Tribunal which directed the Union of India to grant the same pay scales to typists as those applicable to Senior Clerks, Head Clerks, and Office Superintendents, effective from 1.1.1996, and to pay arrears accordingly. The Court found that the typists had a legitimate claim based on the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission, which treated them at par with clerical staff. The Union of India's challenge was dismissed, affirming the Tribunal's authority to issue such directions under the relevant administrative law principles.
