Judgment text excerpt
The Supreme Court held that the distinction between 'Archaeology' and 'Epigraphy' is significant, and experience in Epigraphy cannot be equated with field experience in Archaeology for the purpose of appointment as Superintending Archaeologist under the Archaeological Survey of India. The Court emphasized that the Union Public Service Commission and the Archaeological Survey of India are expert bodies, and their decisions should not be interfered with lightly. The Court upheld the High Court's decision to allow the writ petition of Dr. S. Rajavelu, thereby setting aside the appointments made without considering his qualifications.
