The Supreme Court ruled that the pensionary benefits for retired teachers of aided colleges, who were entitled to UGC pay scales, should be calculated based on the last pay drawn as per Rule 296 of the Karnataka Civil Services Rules. The Court held that the clarifications issued by the Government of Karnataka regarding the computation of emoluments for pension purposes were valid and applicable to the appellants. Consequently, the appeals were allowed, affirming the entitlement of the appellants to the revised pension benefits as per the UGC scales.
