Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the 5% weightage awarded to Telugu Medium candidates in recruitment by the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission violated Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution, as it was discriminatory against Non-Telugu Medium candidates. The Court overturned the decision of the Andhra Pradesh High Court that upheld the weightage, stating that the rationale for the weightage was not justified. The Court maintained that while the appointments made based on the weightage should not be disturbed, the practice itself was unconstitutional, leading to the quashing of the Government Orders granting such weightage.
