Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the validity of the Jharkhand State Government's Notification No. 5800 dated 10.10.2002, which amalgamated the Extremely Backward Class and Backward Class categories and reduced their reservation from 12% and 9% to a combined 14% for admissions in professional educational institutions. The Court clarified that the earlier 73% reservation was ultra vires the Constitution, affirming the High Court's decision to limit reservations to 50% in accordance with the Bihar (Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes) Reservation Act, 1992. The appeal was dismissed, affirming the State's resolution on reservations.
