Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) cannot deny electricity connection to M/s. Amit Products (India) Ltd. based on arrears owed by a previous consumer, M/s. Amar Amit Jalna Alloys Pvt. Ltd., as the appellant is a distinct legal entity. The Court emphasized that the insistence on payment of previous dues violates Article 14 and Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, which guarantee equality before the law and the right to practice any profession or carry on any occupation. The appeal was allowed, overturning the High Court's decision that had rejected the appellant's claim for a power supply connection.
