Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that for a conviction under Section 304B IPC, the prosecution must establish that the death of a woman occurred under abnormal circumstances within seven years of marriage, and that she was subjected to cruelty or harassment in connection with dowry demands shortly before her death. In this case, the Court found insufficient evidence to prove that the deceased was subjected to such cruelty or harassment, leading to the conclusion that the appellants were entitled to the benefit of doubt. Consequently, the Court set aside the convictions and acquitted the accused.
