Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the Central Administrative Tribunal's ruling that migrant Scheduled Caste candidates who migrated after the 1964 Presidential notification cannot claim reservation benefits for employment in the Union Territory of Pondicherry, as per Article 341 of the Constitution. The Court emphasized that eligibility for reservation is confined to those specified in the notification and reaffirmed the principle that only original inhabitants of Scheduled Caste origin in the UT are entitled to such benefits. The selection of migrant candidates was declared illegal, and a review of the selection process was mandated.
