Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, particularly the 1991 Amendment which imposed a total prohibition on the trade of imported ivory under Section 49-C. The Court found that the restrictions were not violative of Article 19(1)(g) or Article 14 of the Constitution, as they were justified in the interest of wildlife protection. The appeal by the ivory traders was dismissed, affirming the High Court's decision to uphold the Act's validity.
