Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court examined whether 'Banphool Oil' should be classified as a 'perfumed hair oil' or an 'Ayurvedic Medicament' for excise duty purposes. The appeals challenged various judgments from the Customs, Excise and Gold (Control) Appellate Tribunal (CEGAT) which had held the product to be an Ayurvedic medicament. The court addressed the conflict between technical and judicial interpretations of the product's classification under relevant Tariff Items.
