Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court addressed whether presidential assent under Article 254(2) of the Constitution of India, granted to remove repugnancy between State and Central laws, applies globally to all existing Parliamentary laws on a subject. The Court ruled that such assent is limited strictly to the specific laws identified by the State Government in its proposal. Consequently, the State legislation prevails only in respect of the specific laws for which repugnancy was pointed out and assent was sought.
