The appellants were convicted under Sections 302, 307, 364, 323, and 324 read with Sections 149 and 148 of the IPC, and the Arms Act, for the abduction and murder of Sukhchain Singh. While the High Court acquitted several co-accused, it upheld the conviction of the appellants based on the testimony of an injured witness (PW-4) and an eyewitness to the body's disposal (PW-7). The Supreme Court was called upon to review the conviction and the evidentiary value of the prosecution's witnesses.
