Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court upheld the Karnataka High Court's decision to reduce compensation awarded under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, from Rs. 3,13,000/- to Rs. 1,71,000/- and from Rs. 3,49,000/- to Rs. 1,83,000/-. The Court affirmed the High Court's finding that the income of the deceased victims was Rs. 18,000/- per annum, applying a multiplier of 14 based on the age of the younger parent. The distribution of compensation was directed to be 25% to fathers and 75% to mothers, with specific provisions for fixed deposits for the mothers.
