Judgment text excerpt

The Supreme Court held that the conviction of the appellants under Sections 304B and 498A IPC could not be sustained as the prosecution failed to prove that they subjected Sudama Devi to harassment with the demand for dowry 'soon before her death'. The evidence indicated that only the husband, Ram Pukar, was responsible for the dowry demand close to the time of death, while the appellants' actions were not within the relevant timeframe. Consequently, the Court acquitted the appellants and set aside their conviction and sentence.
